Slow to enter Info
I found that this software was very slow to select and set up the fields that were required to be entered before you could actually enter the information from the slips. If you have the slips there should be a way to shortcut the questions and enter the slips directly.

Needs work
Overall, never had a problem with data submitted to CRA for the past 10 or so years. My problem, is with the difficulty in making changes once started. Can't delete and even if you go back to profile and change info, it still does't correct information. It would help very much if;
1) CD downloaded, Web online versions, etc., didn't use same helpful hints. i.e.. go to forms or easy navigator(my online version doesn't have those designations, so info provided is not only totally useless, but frustrating.
2) a clearer explanation of who should split pension income (do both check box ? or how do we determine? explanation lacks badly.
3)Clean up the data & profile info system so it is easier to navigate and make changes.

I'm so used to doing my own taxes that I find it frustrating not to be able to see the actual tax form as I am going through the process. I also feel left in space when I'm finished and don't know whether CRA actually got the information. It is faster though.

Frustrated that I've used this software for years & every year login & have to re-enter basic personal information. It should import, but doesn't. Will likely look at another service provider next year

Buggy but useful
Some things were not self-evident, i.e. when entering amount of tax to be transferred from federal to the province of Quebec, the instructions are not clear. I entered the 45% amount, which seemed to be correct, but only after finishing and review a printout did I realize they wanted the same amount they had printed above. Plus originally I had selected to split pension income, then changed it, but it still showed up on my Quebec form. Had to go back re-select to split, then change it again and it finally worked.

Tough Work
This has been the toughest and most confusing program I have ever used. I ran around in circles trying to find things and kept getting bounced out of the program and thought I would never get finished in time. Will I ever use the program again? Not if my PC is up and running.

An oversight in the program
I used this program based on my experience with the US version of Turbotax. We moved to Canada mid-year and I had never filed with CRA previously. Overall, I found it easy to use and was happy with the refund. However, there was a significant inadequacy in the program, for my specific situation. I put in the information that we had moved to Canada mid-year. Subsequently, I declared all my foreign (US) source income. The program should have then asked me if that foreign source income was earned before or after I became a resident of Canada. Per CRA rules, my earnings in USA prior to becoming a resident do not need to be declared and are not taxed in Canada. However, I had to figure that out myself when I realized Turbotax was calculating my tax burden as if I had made all that money since becoming a resident. This is a significant inadequacy, in my opinion. A person expects the tax software to know the rules and ask the appropriate questions to determine which apply. I do not think I should have to search for them myself on CRA website and then manually omit the declaration. I realize that most filers are not new residents; but some are, and this is a simple rule easily fixed. If the program simply asked what foreign source income was earned prior to residency--or, if it gave a clear instruction to omit foreign source income earned prior to residency--a lot of time and irritation could be saved.

Questionable Value
If TurboTax allowed you to enter your details and then see if an upgrade to Premier was required, that would be fair. I question this upgrade provided any real value to me.

Capital Gains on Investments
I probably wasted over 10 hours this year trying to make sense of how to enter capital gains/losses from investments. The "Help" buttons and other questions did not clearly address how to proceed. I tried entering the data from T5008, and then also entered the same information on the Capital Gains forms. This resulted in a doubling of the amounts, but this was only evident once I reviewed the final submission copy. A phone call to Tech Support confirmed that only the T5008 was required. The Capital Gains form should therefore clearly direct users NOT to enter data that has already been entered on a T form.

Some problems
It would have been very helpful to know at the end that the nameyear.tax download is NOT readable. I was afraid to go the next step for a long useless time until I phoned for help.
The capital gains/loss section is tricky. Could be much clearer if they would just stop asking obscure questions that you would think were screened out on profile page.
It is better than last year. Still took me sooooo long to do because of the fear of making some mistake.

Still difficult to be sure that the carry forward info. from previous years will come forward because the text explanation is unclear. Also some pages hung up if you wanted to change already entered data. Overall acceptable, but I can't really compare to competitors software, as I've never used it.

Just ok
I found the sections on capital gains/losses and carryover/back confusing. The Personal Tax Profile Section questions on losses asks "Did you have SMALL business investment losses?" Small is confusing as it applies to any corporation. I thought it applied to someone owning a small business at first.
I would also like more detail on income splitting, specifically the impact on each individual spousal's return with out having to go through the whole process. Although I did eventually figure out navigating through the tabs shortened things up considerably.

not as easy as it seems
there should be more direct linkage between the individual questions and filling out the forms, e.g. if it asks for capital gains information then you should fill out the infromation at that time and not as you progress through the software

Fails to properly claim spousal rrsp contributions
I don't like the online version due to it's limitations. It's not as easy to complete spousal returns to maximize claim & the program failed to claim spousal rrsp contributions even though there was sufficient contribution room, etc. If I wasn't already aware that the deduction was allowable I wouldn't have received my maximum refund. And you can't look at the schedules. I will look for a different program next year.

1 Scare but others wise good
I found the step by step process very helpful and easy to follow. Everything went well up to Print and File. Then I couldn't download the PDF file to save it and couldn't download the tax file to send it either. Looking through the community Help Q & A just added to the frustration as I read about others with problems. I tried disabling my security software, and repeated the process a number of times. I final gave up and emailed complaining. The following evening I tried again and everything went perfectly. What a relief.

Apple users at a disadvantage
I use an Apple Computer and it seems you can not purchase Turbotax from a retail outlet. when purchased online it seems more expensive. Turbotax recommended I upgrade to Premium because I indicted I had some stock investments-- resulting a more expensive programme. One on which I could not do my wife's income tax without paying more. In the past I have been pleased with Turbotax. Not so much now.

TOO many pages of optional charges that pop up
I completed my taxes succesfully but when it came time to pay $50 for premier, TurboTax asked for $120 because all of a sudden my return became classified as Assist & Review. I did NOT knowingly pick this and couldn't change so i HAD to start a 2nd return.
At the end of my 2nd return, Turbo Tax now was asking me for $50 premier which is correct PLUS another $70 for a bundle i didn't ask for. And since this too CANNOT be changed i started a 3RD return and i took my time going through the steps.
And here is the Crux of the matter, there are about 5 seperate times throughout the return one is asked whether they want to upgrade or want to add bundles and lets add this and that. This is totally annoying. Furthermore the added options are YES as default so if you dont stop and read carefully you may pick an option accidentally, and once its picked and you click forward then you CANNOT undo this.
I must have erroneously picked an option i didnt want TWICE and hence had to do 3 returns. The last one finally was $50 but all the time spent was 3 or 4 hours more.
This has never happened before with me with Quicktax/Turbotax. I have No doubt its deliberately placed to trap you ( 5 spots) into accepting options that cost another $70 or more. And making it impossible to UNDO what you just accidentally accepted.
QuickTax was never a problem but in the last 5 years, little by little Turbo Tax is getting really annoying about various items and i'm finally thinking of not using Turbo Tax for year 2026.

Too Many Similar Choices
Too many similar choices. We bought the wrong licenses at Costco and did the tax return without knowing. Thought I had to enter the license at the end. When we entered the license, we realized we had purchased the wrong one.
The default in TurboTax is to ignore the licenses we purchased and buy entirely new ones.
This should not be so complicated. Another year I bought the wrong box as well (I bought the downloaded software and not the online one). Just make one or two packages and be done with it, and when you know someone screwed up, don't try to screw them out of more money by defaulting them to buy a whole new license when they only need an upgrade. You can't return a license you have already activated so don't ignore it.

Continued Bug
There continues to be a bug when Form T5008 is imported from CRA site. Box 13 is not captured from CRA's Form T5008. Since Box 13 defines Foreign Currency, this means the values in Boxes 20 and 21 have to be recalculated MANUALLY by the Turbotax user into CAD.
Year after year this bug has remained to date unfixed. I see discussions online about multiple users moving away from Turbotax to another product due to this ongoing bug.
