Turbotax Premier
Works well but hard to get any assistance within the program unless you want to pay for it.
Quite an increase in price over the standard version just to accommodate pension income.

Usually fine, but issues this year
This year I had more T5008. There was a line that wasn't on the T5008 form that wasn't filled out and caused an error (investment/capital gain selector). I had to edit it over a dozen times. During the review it didn't explain the error. I was told I could not netfile because of the error. This should have been handled much better by Turbo Tax.

Simple and complete
I have continued to use Turbo tax for a number of years. It is simple to use and covers a number of scenarios. I do taxes for my family and haven't had issues with any of their returns.

Very Good Product

not as good as last year
Found it unnecessarily more complicated this year. The bad disk I purchased needed manual help from an (excellent) TurboTax support person, but should never have happened. TurboTax should never count a print out needed to verify hard-to-read-and-check-onscreen forms (eg medical expenses) against the limit on tax returns with the purchase. That was truly appalling and leads to more error filled tax submissions and takes longer

A point of confusion.
When showing the overview of the final numbers in a Split income, the partner with the higher income's total is shown after e.g. $20,000 has been added to the spouse's income. This is a distorted picture the $20,000 should be shown deducted from the other's total. The combined income total is $20,000 higher than it should be.

Good but still can improve
Need to improve by adding an option in the RRSP profile for a checkbox for transfers to an RRSP that do not affect the RRSP limit. For example, a transfer from a RIF to RRSP

Optimizers NOT always right
Optimizer is NOT always right and can be misleading. Medical Optimizer moved all my medical claims to my wife whose income is lower because of a large RRSP claim but his results in lower refund. I have to manually moved my medical claims back to me to restore the higher claims. The Optimizers cannot take care and consider all scenarios.

T5013 forms should allow splitting between joint owners (spouses), similarly to T3's, T5's do.
No visible way to turn off the nag about the easy-step interview input format even if you are using the forms method. Should have a way to do that in the preferences settings.

Economical Purchase
A good product to purchase if you need to prepare more than 1 return. ( i.e. friends/family) If returns are pretty straightforward then it is much easier and cheaper than everyone going to a tax preparer.

Good purchase/ Easy to use
Overall a easy program to use.
Compare to the basic one, its not much difference so i will go back to the basic version next year. The questions that you cannot answer still cannot be answered after reading the hint and tips from the help assistance.

Confused
T5008 download using autofill needs to specify each entry as capital gain or investment. There should be a way to specify all entries as one or the other then modify the few exceptions.

Not Yet Perfect!
The Principal Residence Designation Worksheet was not needed, but several boxes in the form were prechecked with x. I could erase the x's, but the program refused to accept the changes and continued to include the unwanted worksheet in the completed tax return.

Turbo Tax Basic is Enough
I paid extra $ for Turbo Tax Premier this year because I have professional income and I discovered that this module of the software offers no meaningful additional features I needed compared with Turbo Tax Basic.Therefore, the Premier cost was a waste of my money.

Occasional roadblock

suggestion
The "Optimizers" ought to be available without going to the "easy step".
Also it would be nice to have an "optimizer" for Capital gains. One has to designate the split between spouses but there is some latitude on how this can be done.

The RRSP contribution for those who do not have a benefit for contributing in a tax year is wrong and needs to be fixed...If there is no benefit to using a deduction, it should be automatically carried forward to the next year

Too many issues this year
This is often a seamless process, but this year I had to call tech support three times for assistance, the update wouldn't download and the online support on the website is just a forum of where random people place their opinions. Tech support was wonderful, but I shouldn't need to call them.

Good but always a but
All slips are accounted for if you answer the startup questions correctly. Very good - better than previous years IMHO. BUT - regarding interest paid to earn investment income. Entered on TT form as requested but then got warning at the end. Fix option shows the interest amount was entered on the "actual" form as management fees rather than interest expense. Had to "fix" that. I assume the change was effected on the CRA forms and it ended up in the proper line. AND - it would be nice if pension splitting had a wizard to show side by side effect of which way to split - current method means split one way then back up and split the other way to see what the impact was. If I'm doing it wrong then the interface need to be improved so that it is obvious the best choice has already been made.
