A guiding hand

Does the Job!

Turbotax Premier
I really like using this software. I would have to pay an accountant if I didn't use TurboTax. The only thing I had trouble with was splitting the rental income between my husband and myself. It wasn't clear how to do this I think.

medical exp glitch
If you enter the wrong dates (eg. future date the year) in your medical expenses they won't be used. There is no warning that you have used a future date, or that some stuff you entered won't be used.

Useful
Turbo Tax does the job and is useful. The reason that I gave 4 stars is the help provided in the software. I have commented this point each year but it does not improve much. The other reason is the high price. Other than these two points, it is very useful.

Couple of Issues
Medical Expense Optimizer should automatically use the best refund scenario after pressing optimize button. When I pressed the button it just switched to my spouse even though the best scenario was when I claimed.
On Schedule 14, Turbo Tax should be able to automatically put in an amount at Line 6 if you reside outside of a CMA. I had to enter myself.
If I had missed these 2 items it could have cost me $300- $400.

Great product but many crashes
I have used Turboxtax since it used to be Quicktax. More than 20 years. It's a great product. Especially now that I do some trading. Downloading and filling in all T5008's is great.
But my only gripe is many crashes along the way. I don't know the reasons but I save the return after each step to preserve my work as it can crash at any time. Especially during the Netfile process.
After filing via Netfile every time I open the return and want to see my NOA I have to go through the filing process all over again.

Good software
This is the only way to do taxes, using good, tried and tested software like Turbotax. SO much easier than the old days when I used to have to write my own "spreadsheets" to help me calculate various tax scenario's. The only problem is the "endless loop" at the end. All the returns I filed ended up with "continue return" button and none showing "complete". A bit frustrating, but that's a glitch I hope they fix for 2019

Glitches?
I believe there is a glitch, after entering rental information and saving. When I went into verify the information i had entered the rental unit would duplicate and replace another causing a huge error.

Does the job
It does the job. The EasyStep Interview works pretty well. I've been using it for the last 4 years and have never had the government come back and make corrections, something that happened 3 times with my previous accountant. Why pay someone to make mistakes, when TurboTax does the job quite painlessly?

Easy Peasy
As a working stiff my taxes are pretty straight forward but Turbo Tax makes it even easier and automatically sends the return to the CRA. A few days later my return is direct deposited to my bank account.

Essential assistant
I continue to employ TurboTax Premier to get me through tax season as I have since its inception......it saves tons of time and sometimes money too. I like that it covers many areas that are easy to overlook, as well as some built in 'wizards' for help in decisions.
This tax year(2018) I found one weak spot that I missed which I would not have if there was a bit more clarity in the instructions:
I imported all of my slips online from CRA My Account, which is a terrific savings of time....many hours worth in my case. However, using Easy Step in Schedule 3 #3 traded shares etc I entered my various stock trades from my broker summary...as it appeared to be the correct place to enter the data. What I missed was that the same data was automatically entered (during the My Account info download) and appeared on the Schedule 3 Supplemental Statement (Supp) which follows shortly thereafter BUT is easy to miss since it is in the section (From T5008 Slips) at the lower half of the 2nd page which didn't pop into view (until I went searching for it later, knowing something was amiss). All of that data was in the correct place, however it was then automatically added to the Schedule 3 #3 under "see Supp. Schedule" which essentially doubled the trade data $$$ and overstated the capital gain/loss line info.
I think that a clearer instruction should be inserted in Schedule 3 to prevent inadvertently entering the trade data there when it has already been transferred into the Supp from My Account. In fact I went back to tax year 2017 and picked up the exact same entry error that I had made, so thanks to "ReFile" I corrected it .
It surprised me that I missed this 2 years in a row, that the TT program didn't pick up on it (the duplication), nor did the CRA (although can't blame them!).
Bottom line for me is to always review the final draft before submitting the return to the CRA....and doing this on paper helped me to spot the error of my ways (I neglected to print it the first time 2017.....never again).
All in all TurboTax a great program and I will always use it.

Joint Returns
For all income streams, the income needs to be split-able in a joint return. For instance we had a number of T5013 forms from a joint account that came in my name and SIN and your program didn't let it be split - I had to do it manually. It does it for T5,T3 etc so why not all income forms

Could be better
The product has still some problems and limitations.
1. The Donation Optimizer doesn't transfer the optimized value to the Return,
2. The T5008 form is still limited to 30 entries,
3. Some of the inconveniences from last year have been fixed, e.g. "Your Percentage" on T5008,
4. I would like to see similar "Your Percentage" on all applicable forms, like Interest Expenses.
5. Clicking the "Ignore" button during the Review process acts like "Do not show this screen again" and it's very difficult to reinstate this option again if a mistake was made.
6. HELP file contains very limited information and is rarely really helpful.

Solid with a few of the age-old challenges
Another tax year accomplished - getting to the deadline with TurboTax. I still wish it could split share units fractionally in Schedule 3 when allocating disposition of shares sold between spouses (holding a joint investment account). One other regret is having no record of my Netfile confirmation as software hung when printing confirmation (to Microsoft OneNote) after Netfiling - so software never saved Netfile outcome - the developers should commit that workload to the database before offering the print options - or I'd recommend users skip the printing and just press "Done" to ensure it gets saved.
