Reliable and Easy
This product is easy to use for the nervous tax preparer. It guides you through all of the most common tax situations. Not as good in the most complicated of situations but for the average family it is a good bet. This company has a well proven track record in the industry as being reliable. Wish the Mac version of their product wasn't so overpriced. There is a significant disparity in the price of the two formats...

Very easy to use but pay attention. Somehow I managed to enter my T4 contributions and adjustments twice for my 2010 income tax file. I got a larger refund than I should have and then got slapped with a penality.. Alot more cautious this year.

Standard Program would have Worked
We didn't see the advantage to the Premier edition. We purchased for the rental advice, but didn't really find much. We didn't need the extra returns, so we likely could have saved money with the standard version. We'll have to try it next year.

Good product
Works well, been using it for a few years. Some things could be simplified, such as spouses co-owning a rental property: with 50% ownership each, it would be nice if all amounts automatically were shown on the other return once the first is filled out.
Other than that it is a great product, fairly intuitive and I will continue to use it.

Another Year's Returns Done with TurboTax
The program (retail boxed Premium version) improves a little each year. I used to use forms, but now the question and answer EasyStep is all I use.
The programme could do CAN/USD conversions automatically, but doesn't. This could be an improvement so long as it is clear which way the conversion is being applied.
The nicest thing is the continuous access to the Live Community in context with the page you're on.
Doing the file management for NETFILE is great.
The built-in Optimizers when doing married couple returns are good. Could use another one for who should deduct dependent info best.
Depedent info could be linked automatically to their returns. This used to happen but no longer does.
Info provided by discount stockbrokers is difficult to convert to CDN currency and enter in the correct fields, other than by hand. Perhaps Intuit could work with stockbrokers and banks to establish an electronic tax statement format that could be automatically imported into TurboTax to save putting in countless buy and sell of stocks, options, ETF, etc that an active trader does. This would make the Premium Version much more special than the standard and be worth its higher price.
There needs to be more help (Dependent Optimizer or tutorial) on how to interpret and enter tax and casual income, tuition, and expenses from Canadian students studying in USA or abroad. Similarly, for dependents who work abroad for short periods, but are still resident in Canada. Similarly, for young people who move away during their first year to work in USA or abroad and resided in both countries in that transition year. What about a combination US and Canada TurboTax package for them?
A combined country package for US/Canada or UK/Canada, etc would also be of interest and worthy of a higher price than 2 standard separate editions.

The Name says it All
I have been using Turbo Tax formerly called Quick Tax and Cantax for the past 15 years. It is an accurate and friendly (easy to use) program. I very seldom use the wizard because the program is well organized and straight forward. Also I like the way that we can purchase the version that best suits our needs. I have never had the need to ask for service or support, however I needed to, I am sure the assistance would be as excellent as the program..

Good but . . .
THe light blue screens were hard to read due to lack of contrast. It would be better if the colours could be adjusted.

Good Product for most people
It works well and mostly is quite intuitive. Some of the help screens could be a bit more informative, for example showing which line of the return to go to.
For some reason my carryforward of past capital loss to 2011 was not correct and had to be manually updated. This could have been an error on my part or something the programme used incorrectly in past years but it showed a figure many times what it actually is.
An optimizer for claiming flow through share expenses would be really good for future editions. In the past I have had to manually adjust what the programme automatically claimed to get the best "Bang for the buck". It would use up a full $ of expense to achieve only a few cents of reduction.
Overall I am happy to use Turbo tax - Beats the heck out of a well known tax prep service for those who can follow instructions ok!

Review, Warnings & Error messages
Entering data into Turbo Tax is a breeze. The problem arises after you have entered all the data and it is time for "Review". You may get an error which states that the value shown is wrong and it won't let you proceed until you fix it. The error may be on the paper copy; so I fudge the "fix" and carry on. This is one of many frustrations I have had. If I am to continue with Turbo Tax, the Review procedure need fixing. There are a lot of unnecessary warnings, which are no warnings at all. Some of the comments below do not make sense & I was not sure how to respond. Did my best!

This years version was more user friendly for a "green horn" such as myself in that you could readily go back and check, double check very easy.
In my opinion a vast improvement over previous years.

Compared to the 2010 product, 2011 Turbo tax is a considerable improvement. The linkages between sections and schedules is reassuringly smooth and consistent. There were none of last year's strange, counter-intuitive progressions from page to page. All around I felt comfortable that the product had been debugged of its previous year problems.

Great Program BUT...
If you have a complicated return with rental properties, and capital gains its a "good start". You need to review the forms carefully to make sure everything is in the correct places and the wizard does not include all possible tax savings items. VERY GOOD STUFF. Been using it for as long as I have been doing my taxes.

Good but still room for improvemnt
Overall good but when it takes you back to review an item you can easily return to the exact spot you left from. This sometimes means re-entering data again and repeated clicks to continue.
I still plan to use again next year.

Premier Version Disappointing
I did not find an advantage to getting the Premier version even though it advertised it was best for returns with investments. The Basic version, which I used in the past, would have met my requirements (despite advertisment) again this year, at a much lower cost.

Overall - delivers as usual
Overall - the software did the job this year again - as usual. I like the ease of use from one year to the next and the ability to import data from Quicken to get started.
I had problems with dependents and deductions but found a resolution in the HELP Q&A.
Pet Peeves about navigation - fixing these would one star each (e.g. would make it a 5 on easy to use)
1) forward / back / continue / etc buttons - on the page the buttons to move forward / back are at different heights on the screen rather than consistently at the same height;
a pain when you are going forward BUT a huge ANNOYANCE - when you are trying to scroll back to looking for some thing (like a problem with dependents...)
2) moving between easy step and forms - depending on where you are when you flip from one to the other you don't go from forms back to the same spot in easy step - a huge annoyance when you are inputting / double checking / trouble shooting
a little off-season maintenance for your team :)
Thanks for listening.

Been better
I repeatedly entered values in fields which would not be displayed whwn enetered. USUALLY the value would appear if I clicked on some other location on the page.
I had great difficulty in getting TurboTax to accept a value for the time period for medical expenses. I had to go through the optimizer sevral times before it was accepted. Also it refused to accept a date unless I chose my wife to receive to corresponding deduction. She does have the lower income. However because our taxes are comperable the amonut recovered as a medical deduction is the same for both of us. This year she is receiving a tax return while I have outstanding taxes. For this reason I wanted to use the medical deduction. Once I finally gor TuroboTax to accept the date range I was able to assign the deduction to my return. BUT THIS IS NOT NICE.
My eyesight leaves considerable to be desired (I am close to legally blind). The snmall font used in TurboTax causes me considerable difficulties. I would appreciate an option to enlarge the print.
I have used TurnoTax and it's predecessors for many years becuase it is the only software in which I have some degree of confidence that it will handle my return(s) correctly. As I have some complex investments this is a mark of distinction. However as I indicated above it is not a case or nirvana.

Overall, this is a very good product. The only improvement I can think of right now, would be the ability to import the Medical Expense data from the previous year's return (saving a lot of re-entry time into the current years return).

Close, but could be Better
There are a few stumbling blocks with TTP that could be removed. Why, for instance, do some entry boxes force you to enter "xx.00" after an even dollar entry, and other entry boxes are happy with an entry of xx. ? Entering the extra decimal zero zero is a bit of a nuisance.
Another confusion is associated with navigation through the various parts. You don't have a sense of progress in the interview steps, and a side bar showing where you are continuously would help navigate the program (rather than the pop-up "goto" lists).
While on the subject of the "Take Me To" shortcut, if you use it to go to a section you may have remembered being near the spot you want, the "back" button takes you right back to wherever you were when you clicked "go", rather than back to the previous step of that interview. Intuitively, you would think you could look at nearby interview steps by going "back" and "forward". But NO, the "back" button is context-dependent, so you can't search nearby.
The import of "dependants" does not seem to work when other programs associate the parent and child returns as one file, but the TTP import only captures the married couple. Dependants with income have to be separately entered FIRST, and this is not apparent from the interview steps until you get to an impasse where you don't have the information needed to continue.
For some reason, the TTP "Bonds and other Property" interview screen has room for only two bonds. Unlike every other entry screen, this particular one has no "add another bond" button, so if you have 3 to report, you're out of luck!

Old reliable
Familiar and competent. Does the job without any confusion. There are a few things that could use better explanation, like claming capital losses from previous years. Also it would be good to have the bond interest sorted out before getting to the filing stage. All in all, it works well.
