Confusion
2017 I found easy to use. 2018 much more difficult.
Main difficulty was that I could not download the internet version and even with CD in hand I had trouble. Support tried but was unable to help. The nett result was that I had to start over. Reload the CD and start a brand new (hence second complete return.

Not so easy to use
I had to use the forms methods on several occasions to correct my filing information.
There is no Helpline for Customers to call on in case they need to ask questions.
Turbo Tax could setup a paid service Helpline or structure its product to include this service in Premium package versions

MIssing Feature
Most of the way thru my taxes and I accidentally closed the program. Maybe an autosave feature or even " Are you sure you want to close, all info will be lost " would be nice.

Needs Improvement
Tried the online version with Turbo but it was unfriendly and I could not find the version I worked on. Nagging emails to do my taxes were very annoying. Money gone. No recourse. There have not been any improvements to Premier that I can see from the past 4 years I have used it. It is annoying that at the end there are warnings that are just not applicable. One more thing. It keeps on insisting that we should claim medical expenses on lesser wage earner as this would be more "advantageous". Refund would have been 981.00. When I switched to claiming against higher wage earner the refund says 2931.00. HUH? I have never tried competitive software. But next year I will definitely research early.

Hope you do NOT need help
TT worked on Saturday.
Sunday it failed. Tried the "contact us". First you get a computerized service desk. It has no reset, no return, no correction, no start over. It makes poor guesses to start and has no way to recover.
The problem error indicated a C++ Runtime Error. The internet indicates that this is a known problem. TT would correctly save a backup (ttbk) so the Win 10 save works. TT would save corrupted data for the data file (tt18); clearly the problem is with TT. After working with a TT tech for two hours it was decided that the problem was my computer. And you need to be a computer geek to keep up with the troubleshooting.
TT worked on Monday. ??????????

2018 Turbo Tax
Works fine, some nuisance issues like it kept asking me to register no matter how many times I have registered this year and of course I buy it online form them so not clear why I have to register anyway as anything other than a formality. I am already signed up to the CRA for an account, but it only gave me the choice of a new signup or to stay on paper. I didn't wade through the the help, it's not over friendly and the forums are better although you may have to await an hour or something (but relies are good)
I notice below under life changes there is no 'other category'. My wife dying was a big deal, including for taxes.

Don't Buy This for Estate Taxes
I have used this for years for our joint returns with few problems. Purchased again for my and my deceased partner's returns. VERY difficult to use for joint issues like pension splitting. Strongly recommend that no one purchase this for these situations.

First time using turbo tax. Overall did the job however it's not as helpful as it claims to be. I spent a significant amount of time googling questions and searching the CRA website for answers.

Good program but annoying ads
The program is great and so easy to use. The only thing I dislike is at the end when you are reviewing and preparing to file, there are too many ads to buy their services. That part is a bit annoying.

I have been using Turbo Tax for over 10 years and never had any issue until this year . System would not accept phone number and would not enable to proceed. Also could not obtain support due to no weekend hours. Was very frustrating . I was able to complete by going to Forms format. Have done another report since and bug seems to have been corrected.

It keeps you guessing/poor descriptions
Software is bloated. Descriptions and help info is sadly insufficient. I had to buy the Premier due to stock market involvement. I had to refer back to CRA bulletins to make sure CRA requirements were met. It's actually easier to do the taxes manually. Far too many Canadian owned Tax programs were put out of business by Intuit and then they do a sloppy job

Disappointed this year
Had screen lockups/crashes and redundant questions. Appears as if the finishing touches were skimped on this year. Like every year, I wish the CRA or Revenu QC questions were asked in a simple way that clarifies the intent... not a re-hash of the government questions. You're never too sure what the answer does to your taxes or why you're asked. Glad it's over!

Lack of Software Warnings
I could not understand why the software was considering my total CPP contribution as an overpayment. After two attempts at getting help by phone I finally discovered I had entered a wrong date of birth that would have made my age less than one year. I would have thought the software should have detected an improper age and warned that the date of birth entered was outside of an acceptable range.

Bad for US expatriats
Bad job working with US Social Security and IRA dispositions. Gave error on total pension income in one place by applying pension split to spouse but not subtracting from my pension. Things like exchange rate entries did not specify USD-CAD vs CAD-US, causing us to almost file return in error.

Glitches....
It took a while for me to figure this out, but I found out that when I was getting information about a checked box in the profile section, Turbo Tax would UNCHECK that after I clicked back to the profile section. As well, on the on-screen worksheet "income summary" did not subtract my part of my pension shared with my spouse. It was recorded correcly on the actual return. But this became a pretty frustrating exercise b/c I had to keep checking the forms for accuracy and couldn't trust the EasyStep promptings. This year's taxes were more difficult to do than other years and I've been using TurboTax for more than 25 years,

Good but some glitches
I have used TurboTax for years right back to when it was called CanTax. Very comprehensive and easy to follow. One glitch found this year. Importing T5008 slips from the CRA worked fine but the feature to split with my wife's return did not work at all. All the income remained on my return so I had to delete all 25 slips and reenter manually on my wife's return. Very annoying.

Could be better for investors
The software is not bad with the exception of downloading data from CRA site. When you download a second time it wipes out everything from first download. This is especially frustrating if you have a number of T5008 slips that you have already entered original costs.

Turbo tax is a good product but service is bad
I like Turbo tax but service is awful. Almost impossible to get help and when one does reach an agent their ability to answer questions is not great. Also Turbo tax requires you to enter information (e.g. share name, purchase date etc) that is not required by CRA which can add considerable time if a lot of transactions

Beware of AutoFill
My 2018 tax prep took 3 times as long as previous years. Turbo Tax CRA Auto Fill programming must be changed so that when you choose "No, I will enter manually" it deletes all Autofilled items from that session and leaves original entries unchanged. I checked for missing T3, T5 and T5008s several times and although I instructed that I would enter information manually Turbo Tax entered T3s/T5s twice (which then had to be manually deleted) or overwrote complete T5008s with incomplete data (the T5008 forms often don't have the tax cost, or have rounded proceeds which have to be entered or corrected manually)

Limited Use
Overall, the income tax return is fairly easy to navigate and complete. Limitations on the T1135 form make it awkward. I needed to file a paper T1135 return since there were not enough lines in the electronic version. Filing paper seems to be a bit archaic and unnecessary.

disc was scratched and could not be used, system would not update, dividends not calculated correctly, Schedule K would not populate correctly had to do it manually, dependent information had to be populated manually. Found it very frustrating this year hope its better for 2019

good but not great for Quebeckers
Turbotax is the standard tax software for the lay person, and it's good for federal taxes, but I feel that the Quebec taxes were added as an afterthought - when I download Releve 1's they're not downloaded correctly between T4 and T4A's; private plan premiums are not automatically fed into the medical expenses form from Releve 1's as they are from T4's. And I have to toggle back & forth between the "easy step" and the "forms" to be sure info is entered correctly.

netfiling confirmation?
I have been using Turbotax for many years. This year's version isn't quite as easy to use as previous versions. I followed the instructions, I am not certain if it was netfiled? Previous versions sent a confirmation. This needs to be much clearer. I have no idea whether it was filed or not!!

improvments required
auto fill does not work well. it imports wrong information and sometimes does not import all the information. Hence I am unable to trust the income reported or taxes deducted and have to check line by line in Forms. I do not know if this happens only in Quebec with 2 sets of slips and returns. If this problem is solved , I would recommend the software to my friends. I suggest that the software check the net income of the individual before offering tax credits etc which are income tested ( low income criteria).
