IF THERE WERE REAL COMPETION?
You have made improvements in the "BACK" option which I have been asking for for +5 years. Now do the same when you enter forms from the auto. section and it would be usable!
Also since most "Married" couples have a joint investment account allow a % allocation for capital gains as you do elsewhere allow %'s. ie) 50% for a married couple who both worked....
Again your help function should be improved utilizing a focus group of USERS...
If there was any real completion I woul dgive someone else a change next year...

Good Software
As a former public accountant, I can say that I am pleased with TurboTax, but it pales in comparison to the professional software that we used in our office. Ideally TurboTax would carry forward information slip and receipt details from the prior year, automatically calculate the taxable amount and dividend tax credit information when the actual amount of dividends is entered and include more detail on the Detailed Tax Summary. IE, don't combine different types of income such as pension and/or investment income into single lines.

Not impressed with Tips. Suggestion totally ignore the information that has already been entered and suggestions are rent etc "may" apply. Even when "rent" was not identified as having been incurred.

Problem Filing Because of Initial
In the identification section, it says that you can provide a middle initial which is optional. However, when you Netfile with Quebec it is included as an initial in Line 2 -"First Name" which produces an error in Netfile as Revenue Quebec will not accept an initial as part of a first name. I had to go back to the 2nd line of the Quebec form through Easy Step to remove the initials for myself and my spouse. Then and only then was I permitted to Netfile.

Some Difficulties
Tried to split CPP pension but the software tells you to optimise but does not have an optimise button???
Software recommends that you reduce the medical claim as it exceeds the benefit. Again, no way to check how much to reduce to get maximum benefit??
Whoever writes this software needs to use it to know where the glitches are.

I have used this tax software for many years and I am happy with the results. One aspect I am not happy with is that there seems to be more upselling within the program itself. This is annoying! so I rated it lower this year.

Online better than the box
I'd suggest using turbotax online rather than buying the box. The online interface is much better and seems to flow easier.

still need to improve
I have been using TurboTax for many years and also tried other software before. Although TurboTax provides a better interface comparing with others. There are still unsolved problems and inconveniences, such as Save PDF to fill doesn't save all the forms, unchangeable transferred amount from spouse(Line 326), too small screen and characters.

Fonts Too Small
This program suffers from scaling problems with high DPI displays. The fonts are way too small and some of the buttons at the bottom of the screen are partly cut off.

I thought I would have access to actual professional tax advice if required. Not the case. I was told by you help centre that your tax centre can only help with navigating turbo tax itself. I was a bit disappointed by that. Put more links for definitions. And the look of the software reminded me of windows 2000, choppy and cheap, upgrade the appearance.

Not bad but tips and suggestions not great
I found the tips and suggestions to be too generic and not necessarily related to me and too much of a laundry list (e.g. tips for lower income people where I would not qualify etc). Also the help feature did not zero in close enough to what you were looking for e.g. put you do a generic screen related to the page you were on.

Uncorrected bug
I reported a bug in TurboTax 2013 on April 25, 2013. It concerns the number of months of income that a new couple (in our case, a new common-law relationship) may count towards pension income splitting.
TurboTax would not allow us to change its derived figure of 7 months although the anniversary of starting our relationship (and the earliest that we could claim to be a common-law couple) was September 2013.
Fortunately, the optimum figure for income splitting was low enough that this bug did not affect our returns.

Could be Improved
The Northern Living Allowance is difficult to find. Should flag it for you off your address, A or B zone and advise you if you have travel allowance to claim based on your T-4 entries.

User Interface needs work
On the good side, TurboTax has the forms and does the calculations.
On the poor side, the interview process takes too long and does not attempt to use the data/information from the previous year. I only used this mode for my kids, and even that was excruciating. However, it did offer a glimpse of where the development is $$ is going. The T-slip entry on the interview side seems to be much better than the Forms side. The data entry window for "non-interview" T slips dates from the time screens were 640 x 480 - or so it seems. Then there are the tiny sub-windows that pop up (like box 49, 50, 51 on the T3) which slows me down, and then hides the numbers so a double check requires opening the pop up again. Try entering a T5013 - it takes 4 "pages" and is not in any perceivable order!
Finally, the review process is frustrating because all of a sudden you see things out of context and have to guess what to enter. If you leave the review, then you have to step through it again from the beginning. Then the Netfile brings up some of the same items again. Finally, on three out of four filings, I got an error that says the interest I reported doesn't add up, and so one blindly chooses bank/mortgage/bond/T slip and changes a number to make it balance.
The opportunities offered during review should be vetted against known facts. There was something about pension income on my 23 yr. old child's review. Many of the suggestions could be ruled out by TurboTax based on income or age, rather than having someone fill in a bunch of details and then find there was no way they could qualify.
I keep using this program because it does the job and I know how it works - or more to the point, I'm afraid to start over with another program because I definitely don't know how that works!

Will not purchase next year
Turbo tax was easy in some forms but not others. IT was hard to find forms that werent available on the main screen. When you put your address in it should come up with tax advantages for your area instead of having to hunt for it. Will actually be going to an accounttant next year this program is not useful at all

Needs Better Foreign Income Detail
The program needs better details for residents with foreign income. The review process shows warnings for items which Turbo Tax has completed properly and still shows a warning. Some of the details required to eliminate the warnings don't have options for foreign income and deductions that are included as "Other Deductions" as an example.

Needs work
The ability to toggle between spousal returns, without having to save and close one, would be a very useful time saving tool. This is available in Profile, and should be added to TurboTax.

Missing Functionalilty
Was very disappointed that the promoted feature for ease of filing was not available. Some questions, already asked by others, had no answers. Overall, I find the program fairly easy to use. I will probably use it again. But, I repeat, I am really disappointed that a promoted feature did not work.

OK but not the best.
Believe most people would like to be able to print the year over year details and the husband and wife's comparison when a couple prepares their returns together. It would also be helpful if the program would automatically canculate the best "incoming splitting" dollar amount.

Needs improvement
the total interest foul up on trying to net file is something that should be easy to fix and for some reason the program kept telling me that an update was available but then couldn't find the file in my system to complete the update. this year's edition did not stand up to prior years.

Fair, but could be better
I found the format a bit confusing for data entry and easy to miss items. The review format was not intuitive.
Add-on purchase requests for audit insurance and review assistance were expensive and the adds a bit annoying
The program no longer supports older software such as QuickTax tracker. This is unfortunate.
Overall, the program works but should not be given any awards!

room for improvement
I was doing my parents taxes. One was an estate return. It states to separate the returns as one has to be paper filed. It created a lot of extra work. It would have been nice to carry forward the previous year return, complete 2013, then be able to split the return apart to allow one to be e-filed and the other printed and mailed in.

Question:
Why - after changing the warning advice, it still comes up as a warning. I found that very confusing - and would like to have an explanation before ordering the software for next year.

Ease of Use Needs Work
Data entry is a pain. Copying and pasting should be much simpler when, for instance entering repetitive medical claims. Just make me type the information that changes not everything again and again and again! Give me a good review screen. Don't just show part of the T5 or T3 or medical/donation info. Don't make me switch back and forth to the forms mode to see all the data at once. Your medical claims optimizer is a joke. It kept suggesting the claims should go on the return of the taxpayer with the lowest income (married couple situation), even though the taxes owing rose by over $1000.00. A true optimizer woold look at the result not just suggest what works most of the time. People may be being misled into paying extra tax because of this.

helps a lot but...
i have used turbotax for years now, probably 10. It is still a reliable tool for me to do taxes on my own.
A few things that need some fixing.
The step by step process asks too many questions, some ambiguous at the start of each section. I understand that they need to scope down the sub areas but it is too much for a rapid fire selection process. I found that I needed to go back and enter using forms method due to this. I suggest that you have an option to just go through each subsection with a more detailed description in each section. I spent over 50% of my time looking for errors due to this. I have never spent so much time in the forms method as this year.
Chill out on the cross sell parts of the application. I paid for this software yet it felt like freeware at some points. Uncool for bought software.
Several of the warnings did not actually provide any useful remedy to the warning. mismatch from the warning message on the summary to the options in the wizard.
I like the full integration with netfile now. Great simplification.

CCA claim area A
When an asset is sold in the year, and the proceeds exceed UCC, the net balance - which becomes recapture (ie negative CCA) - currently cannot exceed 999,999.99. T
This is a problem as the total asset pool could be a large number and therefore recapture... for the entire asset ....could be over 1,000,000.
This is applicable to small investors like myself as my share of ownership was only 1% but the table still wouldn't work
Turbo tax advised that I had to override - handwrite in correct amount - actually many amounts on the return and file by mail.
A real hassle.. offset much of the benefit
Please expand the balance and CCA for the year columns to accept at least 9,999,999.99

Needs some work
I upgraded from the Basic version to the Premier version and had to re-enter all self employment income and rental income. Also had duplicate rental income entry on co-owned properties. the software should be able to split the amounts so that it only needs to be entered once.
