Complex filing issues
I have used this program for several years. As my investments become more complex, there are more steps that are not intuitive. The program does not accept all the fields on the T5013A, and as such requires that the user open up a Tax Guide, which then dimishes the usefulness of hte program. I may need to see an account next year instead of filing my own return.

Not as user friendly as they think
There are too many steps to review a previous window when you don't know the exact location. You end up going through the entire section to find what you want. There should be a window for each page in the section, so you can bypass what you don't need.
Some things don't transfer from year to year which creates extra unnecessary steps; ie in rental properties with multiple owners, you have to enter the partners addresses for each property, year after year. They could simply put it in and ask if there were changes.

TurboTax 2012 Feedback
1. HBP does not let you designate a higher amt than the minimum, so I didn't bother even though I should have.
2. To change one item, you have to go through the entire section again and again (eg., Income Section). Should be able to adjust one thing, approve and then review.
3. Make this program fool-proof. Don't ask me things the system should know. I had 5-6 simple things to enter and it took me forever (a few hrs) ...
a. Items are too wordy. Be succinct. Use short lists with perhaps sub-lists on the left side.
b. Presentation is poor ... Improve it. Too much wasted space on the pages. Takes too much time to change pages and go back and forth. Use "approve" buttoms to make changes from the review page, say.
c. Provide an endless list for publicly-traded stocks, since they are so cumbersome to summarize/report each year. I usually never have enough room and have to lump trades together to fit it in the space provided electronically. NOT FUN!!!
d. Don't ask me obvious things that the system should know already (e.g., repeated info about marriage, address etc.).
e. Make it easy for the simple filer ... and add additional options/schedules for the more complicated filer.

Hard to see
Unless the screen is about 1 foot from your face the program is hard to see. I recommend they give the program different fonts that are easier to see.

Disappointed with software
I have used this tax program for at least eight years and have prepared a number of family members and friends tax returns over that time. I have worked in the accounting field for over 25 years.
I can no longer recommend this software for a number of reasons. The main reason is the number of "warnings" and recommendations that are not relevant to the persons return I am completing.

medical receipt entry problem
Despite turbotax Help Centre claim that multiple medical receipts can be entered, in Easy Steps, by clicking the "next" button, no such button existed on my Premier 2012 edition. This problem did not exist in previous near decade years of use. Had to use the forms to enter data. Therefore, did not like paying a premium for the Premier Edition but still helps make handling investments, etc. easier.

You need a tech to fix your links!
I cannot believe you did not properly fix the link to the NETfile video even after all the emails you received which informed you of the problems. Even the link on the questions emails didn't work!! Poor, poor!!! Even your survey questions don't work!!! Poor, poor!! It certainly doesn't build much confidence in your product!!

Help line saved me
I always find TurboTax easy to use but this year when I used it as usual I was stopped from e-filing by ONE box. I could not get past this point even referring back to last year's forms to see how this piece of data was handled. Eventually I called the help line & after a few tries, and consultation with others, the help person came up with the game saver. It was not entirely logical but got me past the stoppage & so I am grateful.

disappointed this year
This year I purchased the Premier edition and it was no more help than the basic one!! The printing with that big copy on it totally annoys me and the explanation was not clear on screen. Also to phone for tax help...what a waste.

capital gains/loss entry
I found the capital gain/loss entry fields difficult to use. The column headings were misleading. The adjusted cost base was not the cost per share, but rather the book value of the holding. the help example was useful.

Award
Navigating the various sections is difficult. eg when I wanted to enter/amend a T5 it took me the income page and I had to go through many screens until I reached the appropriate place. Another example is printing the T1. I did not have any business income, information that I included in the personal information, but the T1 printed the entire business section, wasting a lot of paper.

We should be able to print the summary instead of all the pages on Turbo Tax. Use way too much paper and ink to do this.

Good, but not great
I like to use Turbo Tax and find it easy to navigate, but the glitches drive me crazy. I tried to go back and correct an error I had on my form, but it would take me to my husband's form instead????? I filed a joint return, but every time I wanted to input something on one of our forms manually, it took me to the other person's form. Very frustrating part!
Otherwise, I love the program and the tips are very helpful. Work on the glitches and I'll give you a higher rating!

Joint Investment calculations buggy
I have joint investment income with my wife. The T5 percentage split between the returns does not work correctly. I had to manually adjust amounts to be claimed between the two returns. I ended having to enter the information a second time to my wife's return and delete from mine. I should have been able to allocate the income to my or my wife's return without having to enter the information twice.
Similarly, on the partnership income, I had to enter the information twice.
When deleting the partnership information from my return, my income disappeared!!!! Luckily I had saved my progress and didn't have much information to re-enter.
Still, performing the analysis to which return to claim income was very tedious an frustrating.

Problematic - Too Many Problems
I have been doing personal and small business tax returns for years, and without that background knowledge, I am not sure I would recommend this program any more. I found issues with determining if self employed income should be put in as professional or business, and each choice resulted in a difference on the spouse's return without the self employed income, which made no sense, as the net income was the same either way. I was not able to find any information that explained this, and the net income was exactly the same. I also ran into problems with a warning about CPP on self employment that did not apply to us. It came up as a warning, and when I answered no that we did not want CPP on the self employed earnings, it reduced the refund by approx $500. This too made no sense, as the answer was no. Also in the easy step the question quoted between ages of 65 & 70, but in forms it said between ages of 60 & 70, a 5 year discrepency. Aside from that, in regard to this CPP so called error which I had then answered no to, it would not let me go back to that section to review and fix it, so I closed without saving and then ignored the warning. As well, to view the new Net File instructions, I had to download Apple QuickTime, and this info was not given either - but I could see that there were tons of people asking for that info. This caused me considerable delay as I had to contact my computer geek buddy.

First time I paid extra for the Premier version (double the price of the basic version). I had investments/capital gains/dividends in the previous years and used the basic version. I did not see one difference or one improvement on the Premier version to simplify the bookeeping. The labelled information on the Premier package says it is better than the basic for this purpose. I did not see any differences. The only difference is I am out of pocket $30.

The program is not bad. The major disadvantage is the inability to set the donation amount on both spouses returns. Only lets you choose one spouse to claim donations on.

Room for Improvement
There should be a way for existing users to use program in year that they marry without having to re-enter all their information. The best feature is the Live Community information but it could use some culling to get rid of nonsensical questions. As time goes on, the work to find the most relevant answer gets harder.

Missing the "Optimizer"
While TurboTax is a good product, it does have some flaws:
1 - When filling out the T3 form, it sums up the Can. dividends, Increased "taxable dividends" and Can. dividend credit. While I have been told that this sum will not be used in calculating taxes due, it is misleading.
2 - QuickTax used to have an "optimizer" which actually suggested how much pension income should be transferred to one's spouse, how deductions should be divided to reduce taxes, etc. TurboTax only makes "generic" statements/ suggestions and leaves calculations up to the user.

Bug report: recoverable Crash after Netfile
I submitted my return via Netfile, and it opened a browser window. When I was done I closed the browser window, and the TurboTax window was there. I clicked on "done with netfile for (name)" and Turbotax froze with the hourglass/pointer combo as my cursor. I gave it a good couple of minutes, and when I saw that it was getting nowhere, I clicked on the "print and file" tab, and continued from there to Netfile my spouse's return. It went smoothly after that.
