good stuff / bad stuff
2 problems - why does the help info have to be so big on the screen - when you are not using it - it took up about a third of the right side of my screen making the actual working area too narrow to see a full line at a time and I had to keep using the slide at the bottom of the page to shift the info around. If it were across the bottom of the screen you could get access when needed but have the full width of the screen available for the info needed.
second problem was accessing the file name to submit return - but I think that was my fault for not being more careful in picking out the file - expecially since I had printed the page giving me the info needed. Sorted it out and got it filed.

I keep getting the message to include medical expenses, even though I checked NO when asked. This needs to be fixed with your software.

Suggestions for improvement
Just a couple of navigation issues I had problems with:
I could not find the line I was searching for in Forms.
i.e. line 236 for spouse's net income. The line numbers did not show, and only one particular section at a time was visible. It would be much more useful to be able to scroll through the forms as I could previously in Quick Tax.
I could not go back to a previous page without jumping around to previous pages I had visited in that order first - very frustrating!
Thank you.

Medical Expenses
The area I had a great deal of difficulty with was how to input my prescription drug expenses not covered by the insurance company. Claiming premiums paid to the insurer were well detailed, however

Very good for me
It is a straight forward program that made filing my taxes fairly simple.
I appreciated the step-by-step instructions that kept me from missing anything.

Great for filing, UI needs work
The entry of T3s/T5s needs work; I hate the small pop-up boxes (introduced last year?) and they make proof-reading the entries harder than it should be.
The warnings and errors before netfiling are long-winded and confusing. If I exit that process to go back and review/fix something, I have to start over.
I'm not convinced that the optimisations work in conjunction with each other. It's not clear if optimising one thing requires re-optimising another.

Powerful yes, but ...
No question, this is a powerful income tax program, with all of the schedules, the wrinkles, and the details covered off very thoroughly. It also warns you before you do something stupid, which is probably a good idea.
Where it suffers is in ease of use. You have to wade through all that detail, whether it applies to you or not. To help there is a step-by-step process, but it's also mired in detail. If you want to correct a mis-entry, you have to go back through all the steps again. If you have a long list of items such as medical or charity receipts, better get a cup of coffee and settle in for the long haul. If you have capital gains shared with a spouse, get ready to enter all the details twice.
A good program, but less user-friendly than it should be. Doing taxes is painful enough to begin with!

Some confusing features
Overall, happy with the program, until it came to the advice features. Several times it would suggest optimizations of deductions, then in the review it would flag that optimization and suggest adjusting it. It just ended up chasing its tail.
"We recommend you adjust it. Use the optimizer."
So I did.
"Review the adjustment. We recommend you use the optimizer."

some little glitches
Had a difficult time verifying that some data was making it's way into the form. The options assume you will know where to find the data you entered on a T slip. Also, with a couple filing, it would have been good to have a less cumbersome way to find out what was the best way to share income or deductions, Removing from one place and inserting in another got very complicated. Also, when you're doing something new -- like renting out a room -- it would be useful to eliminate that income from the total so you can see what the extra income is costing you in terms of tax. On the other hand, it sure beats doing multiple versions by hand on paper!

readability
Please make the easy step forms more visually readable. It is difficult to tell which text lines up with which boxes (ie on the rental statement). Sometimes the width is also a factor in limiting the readability. I've used this product for years, and I found that this was the first year I had issues with readability.

so convenient
If you don't have a complex tax life with hundreds of entries and other considerations then this is the best choice if you aren't too lazy.
The only problem that I've had both this year and last was in printing to my Canon printer.....the software refused to 'find' it or recognize it. Not a huge deal but a definite bug.

Transfer from Federal to Provincial
Although, it said I could transfer up to 45% of amount retained, it kept giving me an error that I exceeded. I lowered the amount a little at a time because I knew I was below 45%. Even at 25% it would not remove the error. Guess what, I had to print and snail mail the beast adding extra time and cost. This is the 2nd time in many years that I have used the software. You would figure that a mathematical problem would be no issue for a computer...

Reliable, Fairly Easy
I have used this software for the past 10 years plus. It is pretty quick; I can usually prepare my return and my husband's in less than one hour. Our tax situation is fairly simple, but it helps to have the checks in place. I would like it if the explanations were a little less thick with "legal-ese", but I don't know if the verbage comes from CRA or Intuit. Otherwise, we like it and will continue to use it.

Turbo Tax first time user
Found it pretty good to follow, I like the Q&A on right side. Loved that it did all the calculations and informed me of 'their' recommendations. Had a little trouble getting back sometimes, was confused why it asked about RRSP contributions before RRP contributions since I didn't have RRSP contributions.
Will definitely use next year even though it is pricy.

The one form I had trouble with was the medical form. The program automatically inserts start and end dates based on the receipt dates I input. When I later added another receipt with a date a few days outside the auto set date range, the amount of expense was not added to the total and it took me some time to discover why.
It is a very useful tool when splitting income with a spouse.

the program should be able to transfer medical expenses that you don't need to use to reduce your taxes to zero to the next year.
Also the software needs a print button to allow people to print the year-over-year income comparison.

Disability Amount
My husband claims disability amount and this was done on his return. We filed by netfile and this would through. When I attempted to file mine by netfile, and error came up saying that I was claiming the disability, which I was not. I tried to skip this error and it would not allow me to file by netfile. I had to print and mail my tax return.

Another Year
I have been using QuickTax/TurboTax for 10+ years and continue to find it very straightforward and relatively easy to use. You do need to have some level of tax form understanding, however, you certainly don't need to be an accountant. We plan to continue using this program even though in retirement, our tax preparation is relatively simple.

Quality falling
I've been using TurboTax/QuickTax for many (10+) years and this year I saw a significant increase in defects. Quality of the software has fallen since about two years ago (it was worse last year but this year is even worse).
The interface is more confusing than two years ago as well. Explanations make less sense than before.

Great Product
Great product - very easy to follow the prompts as you move through easy step. If you miss something in the easy step process you can go back at any time. Then if you think of something and are not sure where to go in the easy step process you can view forms and double click on an amount to take you to the detailed schedule you need to fill in the information.
Only criticism would be - please fix the problem at the intial stages where you have to scroll all the way over to the right to click the continue button. Could be very frustrating if you don't already know about that issue!!

Great tool - leaves a few questions unanswered
In some places in the form that will be very common to most people, the help info. does not provide FAQ type answers to common questions - this would be a very helpful addition to the tool.
Overall this tool makes filing returns fairly simple.

An essential product every year!
Turbo Tax really does take the stress and confusion out of tax time. Even for a larger family it helps keep all of the claims and credits straight. The only hiccup with the 2012 version is it does not recognize all printers and prevents you from printing confirmations, etc.

My wife and I have been doing our taxes together for years. We've never had an issue using do it yourself tax software. Turbotax is very simple to use and the 'popular answers' area on the sidebar is very useful.
I use this software confidently!
