No Data Transfered from 2019
Data from 2019 return was not transferred to my 2020 return. Had to enter data manually!
This is the first year in many years of using this software that data was not transferred easily by the software. Tried to transfer the data after filling out the tax forms for comparison but the software started a new tax return. Could not incorporate the 2019 data in the first return filled in manually.

Gets it wrong every year
Something wrong every year! So this year it ignored the medical expenses. Clearing it and reentering the software with no expenses then let me put them in again and they took effect this time.

Split Income

Net File
I have used Turbotax for more than 10 years, but for the 2020 Turbotax program it won't allow me to Net File. The message I received was that more info was required, although it did not specify what. I've tried to net file my return for more that 10 days. I'd even contacted Turbotax with long delays and it did not solve this issue.

DIFFICULT TO SET UP
My old computer wouldn't run turbotax because it didn't support Windows 10. Needed to buy a new computer as a result. Then, Turbotax had issues displaying the screen to enter the access code. Had to troubleshoot screen resolution and enter the code blind. It finally worked but was pretty upsetting given I had purchased a new computer.

Good, but issues
I have been using Quick/TurboTax for 20 years. This year a few issues:
- great difficulty in the beginning -3 hours to launch program. Fixed in a few days.
- when completed and attempted to save PDF- return counter had max'd, with no returns printed or filed. Corrected by support, but took 2 days and numerous call drops.
- Odd error when filing T1135: Error flagged, but next screen appears ask something about income, but no field to fill. Filed OK by ignoring.

Suggestions for improvement
- For the netfile option provide a yes or no button . I pressed Continue and then had to figure our how to back track.
- Provide an opportunity to print the Netfile confirmation number
- Provide a remittance voucher for when payment by cheque is selected.

COULD BE BETTER
The software should not be asking irrelevant questions like optimizing rsp deductions when no relevant income is earned or asking you if you need to file the previous year after you have imported last years' file. There are other redundant items. Also attendant care medical expenses are a pain to record. Like all business today Turbo's main interest is selling other services.

Less useful this year
Slower, glitchier product now that we are downloading rather than obtaining a CD yet the price was the same as last year. Noticeable delays between pushing button to move to the next screen and sometimes had to press more than once, The glitch regarding spouses DOB needing to be fixed before being able to Netphile is annoying and not yet cleaned up. Should have been corrected when first notified weeks ago. I am disappointed with this year's product.

Getting worse with age
I have been using Turbo tax for many, many years. This year it is starting to feel like a patchwork quilt. It does not flow as it used to. It either needs a complete re-write or be thown in the garbage.

Off to A Rocky Start
I had TT installed for a month and carried forward some info and entered a limited amount then the system failed. Re-installed but had to start over with new forms. I am filing a joint return and ran into problems. Charitable donatiions I entered into my wife's return ended in my return after an update. Likewise medical expenses. A lot of backing and filling. Not good! All appears OK now.

Moving Expense Deduction
The software should prompt the user for moving incidentals - line 11 on the Moving Expenses Deduction form. It could also tell the user about the CRA standard mileage and per diem meal rates for moving. Also, the software didn't help me at all with the "net eligible income" for Line 22 - if I hadn't have gone to the CRA website I would not have known to deduct the items shown on about six lines of the T1 Net Income deductions section.

getting more confusing
I have been using TurboTax to prepare 5-6 family tax returns annually, for over 5 years. This years' (2020) download was more difficult to use. The Forms at the bottom of the page were confusing to close, which 'x' in top right corner? it was closing the program and dropped some of the entered numbers.I went back & forth with split investment T5's, editing/deleting buttons, as one delete did not correct other pages of same investment. In general, I like the program.

Had much difficulty this year compared to many year previous.
Could not open without being online. I am remote and internet is expensive
Received error warnings even though entries were correct and this forced me to have to print out and send to CRA I even reentered info but it would not go.
I was also told I was over my allowances and had difficulty managing returns.
I have had no previous problems prior to this season.

The Easy Step process did not work well for the new Employment Expense when working from home due to Covid 19.
It kept telling me I was not eligible when I was able to claim under the Temporary Flat method.
I had to go directly to form T777s to enter my information.

not happy with this years program
glitchy, froze on me 3 times 2nd time I lost my information and had to start the process from the beginning. The 3rd time it froze after filing husbands return through netfile ( I had received my confirmation number) when the program reloaded it showed his return as not being filed. Very confusing. I guess we'll find out when we get a late filling fine from cra.

Awkward
This year's version seemed especially awkward to use.
First, it kept insisting that we claim medical expenses against the lower-income earner. Yet, when we applied it to the higher-income earner, we got a bigger refund.
Also, there was no easy way to apply net capital losses using Easy Steps. We had to read how to do it on the CRA website, then go into the forms for this.
Next, the foreign income on a T3 was a real pain. There was a drop-down box that contained only USA, Country #1 and Country #2. Again, we had to go into the forms, and change Country #1 to Global.
Then when I wanted to file, Turbo Tax got mad, and told me I'd manually overwritten a field, and would have to mail in the form. I can only assume it was referring to the foreign income thing ... I really don't know. I selected to back out whatever alleged override error I had committed, and it did netfile in the end.
After muddling through all this, we did get our taxes filed in the end. But it was pretty painful. It took hours. I'm definitely going to look into other tax filing options when 2021 winds down.
