TurboTax 2016 Experience
This is a very good program which I have used for a number of years and is getting easier to use. I only gave it 3 stars because with the March 17 update the auto-update feature consistently gave errors and failed to update. The only fix was to delete two 2016 Turbo Tax programs from my computer and reinstall not from my purchased CD; but from Turbo Tax web site. This was not a fun experience.

OK
Website is consistently terrible and clunky to use, but the software is decent, so long as what you need it for is fairly straightforward. My return this year involved a shift between provinces and a lot of the implications of this and the things to expect regarding how this is sorted out by the CRA were not really explained. To be fair, this is not the usual use case.

Needs work
If it recommends a change it rather leaves you hanging so you better know what that change is and how to do it. It is not smart enough to complete the change it recommends. Also the optimizer is hard to understand what it is telling you. Needs work.

Should be much better
When "overriding" a value on any schedule, there's no reference back to where the calculated value or info came from -- leads to much wasted time. "Help" function is virtually useless!

Useless Support System
The automated Support System provided no help in getting rid of the "Script Error" problem. Could not talk to an actual person and kept getting different options to press. This is my 5th year to use this program and never had and problems in the past. From the number of entries in the Community forum for problem solving, it would appear that there were many people having the script error issue. I am reluctantly recommending the program to others

Not as good as older programs
If you do not need to go back and fix something, this is an excellent program. Very complicate to return to fix a problem. The earlier programs had all the returns on the top of the page and you could switch from one person to the other very easily. Not anymore.

Not sure what happened
I have used the product for several years. This year is the first time that several scripting errors have occurred during use. Every navigation click generated one to several scripting error messages that had to be dismissed to continue. I didn't see any fatal errors happening however and was still able to use the software. I used Win 10 to run the software.

Generally good, however when I tried to split my donations and carry some forward, the programme prevented me from netfiling because I had over-ridden the donations numbers. I did not over ride any numbers. I used the programme to split and carry forward donations. So there is a bug somewhere.

Micro Fiche is easier to read!
Almost impossible to read on a 4K monitor - no scaling available - those with any visual impairment, watch out!

slow to launch on Windows 10
Generally very useable, just extremely slow to initially launch on windows 10. Takes multiple MINUTES for the initial screen to show.

Font too small for a laptop
I had a lot of trouble completing many forms and slips as the font was so small (barely readable) on my laptop. I hope this will be fixed for next year or I may use another software.

Need to work on interst splitting between spouses
The investment splitting portion for investments shared between spouses is very poorly constructed. We enter saying split 50% and only enter for 1 spouse as it suggests and the one spouse gets 100%. So we end up entering 1/2 the amount for each spouse at 100%. The instructions are poor or the coding sucks ... this has not been fixed to our satisfaction over the 5+ years we have used the software.

Need some improvement
Font scaling only work with easyStep mode. Please fix the font scaling issue with the Form mode. Many people are getting high res screen.

deductions
Filling out tax return seemed simple and easy to follow, but I live in northern Canada and happen to know from past returns I qualify for a northern residency tax deduction. You would think that once I enter my address in the profile section that this would come up, at least at least as tax saving tips but no. I had to know what I was looking for in the forms section to fill out proper form. This makes me wonder what else I could have claimed but don't know about.

Upgrade Issues
After closing my return and coming back to it days later, the software had to be updated. The software update failed and I had to uninstall and reinstall. Then the return that was partially finished didn't offer me the correct options for spousal credits, so I had to re-enter all of my tax information again. In past years I didn't have so many issues, so this was a bit of an exception. Generally I am happy with the software.

Fonts are really tiny on high res displays
The problem with fonts being so small as to be unreadable on laptops with high resolution screens persists. I can understand it the first year that the new laptops upped the resolution, but this is year 3 now. No excuse.

I love TurboTax, but didn't realize how basic the 'Standard' version is compared to the 'Premier'. Standard should have questions / capabilities to capture investments (sale of bonds / stocks etc.)

Appraisal
Have been using turbotax and it's predecessor for about twenty years. I am very angry at turbotax, for allowing itself to be controlled by Microsoft, by not allowing the use of Microsoft XP. I was able to use it for the 2015 return, but not for the 2016. Because of that, I was not able to bring forward the previous year's of information, I had to use another computer. Have you people heard of backward compatibility? I am sure there are many XP-s in use and, yes, I prefer it to all of them. I used DOS, Windows 3.0 to W10. In spite of the W10 hype, it is not user friendly, MS made it too complicated
The 2016 version is NOT an improvement over the 2015, that was easier to use. However, I must admit that the on-line registration was surprisingly easier than before.

Used to buy Basic
I used to buy the Basic version. Buying the Standard version was a mistake. Higher cost, harder to use, more annoying ads built into the software. I won't be using this product next year.
