this year was terrible to download
I have used this program for years and years. Never had any issues downloading or updating. THIS year was a nightmare. took several days. Finally got it done but installed , deleted , installed , deleted, repeat repeat repeat. just glad i finally got it done before the deadline. usually i am the first one in, end of February.

corrupt data
For two years in a row, when trying to update online, the TurboTax says files were corrupted and then I had to remove and re-install the software online. Frustrating but in all, it is a good way to file taxes and easy to use. All done online and done without having to print and mail in. I will keep using Turbotax and hope next year does not corrupt again.

I am the first time user of this product. I find it difficult to navigate, hard to go back where I want to be and update the information. It took me more time to prepare my return than it would take to do it manually, which I have done for years now.
Please redesign the program. It is too complicated.

doesn't apply for everyone
Great product if you have a simple return, but if you need to file foreign income or you are a part resident of the year (immigrant, emigrant or non-resident) this is not the software for you!
This software will not calculate or even give you Quebec forms if you chose non-resident (which changes the calculations for Canada Revenue Agency since there is a Quebec abatement.
The mailing address has to be a Canadian address too!
Also if one spouse is not a resident of Canada, this software will not give you options for part xiii or section 216 taxes.
If you live in Quebec or are a non-resident or part-resident for the year, you might want to look at other options.

not too bad a program
There are too many questions when doing a straight forward return for a senior or someone on pension. Some questions don't apply when doing the average return but they still pop up.

Better problem solving options
I live in Ontario. My son attend university is New Brunswick. He also has a job in New Brunswick as a TA. He comes home every summer as he has a job here. It would have been helpful to know in terms of taxes to mark him as a resident of Ontario or New Brunswick. In the questions regarding moving expenses, he had to indicate if he was moving because he was studying OR because he had a job. Both were true because without his job, he would find it very difficult to fully fund his studies. There was no option for "both' Turbo Tax could have done a better job to help figure out what was the best option.

Does the job
Good product that does the job, but every year there is always at least one issue.
1) This year, during one of the product updates, TurboTax said files were missing or corrupt. The software had to be uninstalled and re-installed.
2) There should be a prompt to use or carry forward unused Charitable donations. TurboTax automatically applies them when you start your return.
3) Same as #2 for unused RRSP contributions. Automatically applied at start of return.
4) Foreign pension income (i.e. U.S. IRA) does not qualify for $2k pension tax credit. Should be an EasyStep prompt or warning when doing foreign income.

trouble with updates
the 2016 version we bought today would not let my husband e file. said to check if it needed updated. we tried to do this from within the program and got an error. went to online help, put error code in and got a solution. sort of. had to uninstall the original, then use the web link to reinstall and try e file again. this did fix our current issue, but took us an extra hour...

Impossible to update!
CD Product required an update which I was unable to complete. Followed instructions on website, uninstalled and installed several times to no avail. Finally had to download from software version on line to successfully use this product. Frustrated! Software version was simple and east to use.

dissapointed
this is the 5th year I have used, this years was unresponsive at times, hard to do updates and could not transfer any info from previous years except on one return, I do four every year. Also navigating was harder, had to close out entirely just to go back to another return. I did check and it wasn't our internet connection, everything else works perfectly.

very good
Could be improved by Turbo tax accommodating capital gains reporting where investments are owned jointly between spouses as TurboTax does with T5s and T3s so that user can identify % of ownership with the program then allocating the sale proceeds, adjusted cost base and gain / (loss) on sale between the 2 returns being prepared. This would eliminate the problem of having to input the capital gains / (loss) information twice.

Did everything as I was supposed to but return is much different then every other year. Not sure why my return dropped and I am paying when usual I get a heathy return. Was tired of paying too much to have taxes done but I am not sure this is better.

many glitches
I have used this product for years. Every year, there are a number of glitches surrounding the charitable donations and medical expenses optimizers. This is one of the main reasons that I wanted to use this program, but the glitches are becoming more and more cumbersome. This year, it had a glitch with the property sale of a principal residence that was incredibly annoying. I had to go into the forms method to fix the error that the easy method would not let me accomplish. Then, it would not recognize a value of percent sharing of 0%. These glitches NEED to be addressed. Spending hours optimizing the values myself opposes the reason that I bought this software in the first place!

Upgrade deficiency
Please note that not every person afford to purchase an upgrade computer to install your Turbo Tax software. You may consider upgrade may improve the web security but meanwhile turn off your business with limited income customers. In order to install your 2016 software I have borrowed a friend's laptop which is Window 7 and my old 2015 Turbo files cannot be transferred accordingly. My old computer with XP Window operation system is still in good shape and I will not consider to replace it just because of filing a Netfile with Turbo Tax 2016. I will consider using a paper work for 2017.

CD vs Online Edition
We have been using TurboTax for over five years. We always used the CD version. This year we purchased on Online Edition. Never again. I found using the Online Edition confusing and complicated. Our returns are quick simple - don't understand why this version was made so hard to navigate - I was googling the software to find out if I could print the returns - no straightforward answer. Finally ditched it and purchased the CD version. I will be looking for another income tax software package next year - maybe something free. Comments from TurboTax peeps would be appreciated.

Bad Patch
I was unable to update my TT2016. Received error code tt3015. Followed the instructions to uninstall and reinstall my CD to the letter, 6 times, with no success. Went to TT website help and found that someone else was having the same problem and the resolution was that the patch was bad and user should reinstall the software from TT website. Come on Turbo Tax...you can do better than this!

Okay
I did 4 tax returns. The first two I did went fine. However when I went to do a joint one (my wifes and mine)the next day, when it asked me to save the file the system locked up and would not respond. I did this twice before I called the "help desk". The lady was very helpful and told me to close the program instead and then it asked me to save my work. I said "yes" and this time it went smoothly.

Turbo Tax has gone down in quality since last year. There were times where it added items that I did not enter onto our returns and then called them errors I had to find and take out. At times it would not allow me to do this right away.
Not as good as previous versions. Bring it up a notch Turbo Tax you can do better.

not as good as past years
Even though the interface looked cleaner this year, we found turbotax less good at giving us relevant feedback/tips/warnings/etc. Further, there should be prompts to SAVE at every checkpoint.

Crashed my Computer
I have used Quick tax and now Turbo Tax since it began
I have never had a problem installing and using the product until this year. When my husband installed the disc and crashed my computer
I realize that we have had Microsoft shove their products down our throat but I trusted Turbo Tax to stay up to date with changes. Turbo tax is a user friendly program that I have never had problem with before

Not quite as good as previous years
I like Turbo Tax because it makes filing my own taxes easy. This year though they suggested I upgrade even though my claims were very straightforward.
Also, for some reason or other, it didn't ask me for T5 and charitable donations even though I know I indicated that I had some.
I will still stick with it especially since it simplifies the process by bringing everything forward from my last filing.

Helps are Good, Forms are Poor
I've used Ufile for the past several years, but came to Turbotax because the helps are much better. However, I am not a fan of the way the interview proceeds - it is very hard to jump back to another section if you realize you forgot something or need to amend something. The end of year summary is also not as good as Ufile, and Turbotax would NOT import my past data from Ufile. I found it somewhat more difficult to review in Turbotax because it is missing executive summaries; you either have to wait to the end and sift through the PDF of your return or go to forms mode where you are overwhelmed with extraneous forms and information. Maybe to an accountant this makes sense, but to an average guy I think Ufile struck a better balance between details and explaining what the program had done.

Bugs
Really struggled with the line 208 error where your RRSP allowable deduction for last year is automatically entered as a contribution that has been made. F2 can remove it but only if you go to the right schedule. This problem has existed for 2 years now and still not fixed. Cost me at least an hour or two to figure it out. Lots of comments on line. Of course when you fix the problem you can no longer file using NETFILE so it is doubly a pain. Fix it please. Problems like this should not last for 2 tax years.
