Paying for ads in Turbotax
I find the insertion of advertisements for extra services and upgrades to be unprofessional. I paid a good price to obtain this software and essentially paid to have Turbotax owners pitch their extra services, and largely unnecessary upgrades, to me.
For people unused to filing their own taxes, I can see where they would believe that these upgrades and extra services are necessary to keep the tax department from auditing their return or they are not getting the maximum return possible if they do not upgrade.
The program itself is very good to excellent but the product pitches downgrade the rating to average.

Okay product
The wording of questions at the beginning can be a bit baffling. Some of the forms were not posed to me within Easystep based on initial questions so I had to keep going back to forms to find what I missed. Somehow the program missed the fact I had kids as well and I had to redo that part as well. Best to say "yes" to as much as you can stand so you catch all the categories.

Very Confusing
Smart tips and steps were redundant. Could only claim some things on my spouses return but the smart tips kept telling her that she may be eligible.

Where's the Mac Version?
As a piece of Windows software, this thing is all right, although there's too many adverstisements, but where's the version for OSX? I really hate having to fire up a virtual machine just to do my taxes!

Turbo Tax Standard 2011
While it was fairly efficient overall, there were times when it was very frustrating. A couple of times the software indicated we had errors, but it was not very helpful when we tried to fix the error.
Having said that, the call centre help was amazing! Well done there.

suggestions
It would be helpful if a few notes were offered at the beginning of the return:
1. Being you must have an access code to netfile -it would be helpful to have this information at the beginning of the form so you are ready to go when you get to the last step. Also include points on where to find it & info on where & how to obtain it if you have lost it or didn't receive one. For first time users it would allow you to have everything ready to go when you start your return so you can finish it in one sitting!
2. Establish a process of how to file if you are late filing your return. After a certain time, you can no longer netfile, so it is a real time consuming effort to do it by hand. Indicate the cut-off date for net filing & provide information on where to find the forms on turbo tax for late filers.
3. More detailed information on what you can claim would be helpful.

was not impressed to learn after purchasing the online version that it did not work on a Mac. made filing taxes more difficult. hope you get it sorted out for next year so I do not have to look for another product.

No assistance providing information on properly identifying or filling in forms that were required to be completed.
Nice to have all of the calculating done.

missing forms
due to corruption in a file some forms did not open when I transferred last year's information to this year's return. This was solved by putting all the information in manually instead.

good enough
The main problem I found was the tiny font. I have a large monitor but could not seem to increase the size of the writing. I found it hard to read.
Also found that it did ask me for some information more than once that I had already recorded and they should have been able to automatically insert.
They also kept trying to insist that the lower income spouse claim the large charitable donations which made no sense.

good for average returns
I found TurboTax helpful in years past, and it is a good program for simple returns - but in the future if I have a more complex return, as this year when I had capital gains to report, I would definitely upgrade to another version. The Standard version simply could not handle the complexity of my return this year, and it was quite aggravating for me to use.

Frustrated experience this year
I don't know what internal changes you made this year, but I have never been so frustrated in trying to enter certain things, like medical expenses and charitable donations. It seemed so much harder this year. Maybe therre was a clitch in the program. And only once, after reading very very very carefully was I able to figure out what to do. Also, if one is carrying forward things from previous years (charitable donations, capital losses) more should be done to highlight these, or remind a person that they need to deal with it on their return, not just a quick reference to "you have capital losses from last year" or whatever the expression was.

Suggest on past years deductions
The program is easy to follow with easy step but it would be better if the program would suggest deductions based on last years taxes, to make sure I have not forgotten anything.

Self-employed income mishandled
In 2011, I had $1200 income from consulting fees and $275 from casual income. The only significant deduction from my con.sulting fees was my $144 business license. However, Turbotax calculated my self employed income to be twice what it was ($2662 instead of $1331) and would not let me correct the error.
Turbotax would also do betrter if it did not rely on Internet Explorer as its browser. I use Chrome and don't need warnings about using IE9 as my default browser.

Problems
JNot as easy to use as claimed. Several steps are not identified espacially in the Capital Gains section as to what HAS to be entered.
When one wants to view a page where the amount should be shown, the program opens the "easy steps" instead

Program is not user friendly. For example I checked moving expenses at the begining but later went back and removed it. But the program continue to ask me for moving km from my new location.

problems with provincial info
There is an issue with the MB tuition rebate portion of the return that prevents me from net-filing. I wrote to TurboTax last year but it appears as though the issue has not been resolved.

Print too small for old eyes
I appreciate the function of Turbo Tax but do not find it easy to use visually because the print is too small. As well, I find that with the print being in light blue the problem of seeing what you are doing, and, what you are presently doing, is extremely difficult and very tiring to the eyesight.

UI needs update
Since quicktax was renamed turbotax, i can't help but compare to the US turbotax product. The US product remembers which slips you had each year, and lists last year's amount. It is easier to use. Perhaps update the canadian user interface???

Beware: Font is too small and faint!
1) Allow user to adjust font size. Changing the display resolution is not a solution.
2) Why is font color so faint? Make it dark black.

Not a while lot better than basic online tax filing. The easy step review doesn't ask about basic life changes that can affect taxes (ie. new child), you have to find the appropriate check box youself. Plus a running tally of how your choices affect your taxes would be greatly beneficial. Why should we have to go through the entire program before we can go back and see if we should give him or her the tax benefit from the beginning of the program? The Standard TurboTax is essentially the same product as Basic.

Works fine...no problem BUT how about a darker font color in future. Light gray and light blue may appear nice and cute but are very impractical for the realities of staring at ones tax return figures....and verifying the correctness of keyed data.... and that include the light gray in this comment field!!
What is wrong with BLACK or dark BLUE???

I use this product for about 5 years. Lately it seems to contain more bugs, or maybe it's just my luck that I discover them.
The 2011 version hang on me and I had to restart from the last saved return. Good thing I saved it.
The product offers options that, if taken, make the return not eligible for netfile. The issue has been somewhat resolved by the customer support rep, but I would prefer not to call the support line.
Having said that, the product is fairly simple to use and doesn't require accounting knowledge to operate.
