Tough Year
Tough year on users of Turbo Tax. First was not able to use by old XP machine. Second I was not able to run updates on my Win 7 machine. Eventually I upgraded my XP machine to Win 10. It took me longer to sort-put I.T. issues than prepare and file the return.

2016 version disappointing
I have been happy using this tax program for many years and was surprised and disappointed that since I have Win 10 upgrade on the same computer I have used for taxes since 2010, this year the program would not find, recognize, or open previous years tax file. I was able to open it myself, but even pointing the tax programs browser directly to it did not work. I had to re-enter all info for my wife and myself and did not have access to previous RRSP, charitable contribution and other info from the previous year except by reading the PDF. I hope this does not happen again next year since it is a major incentive to continue using this program.

optimiser error
TurboTax standard was misleading in guidance to put medical expenses on lower income spouse. My spouse had too little income to take advantage of non-refundable credits. Family refund was much higher if higher income spouse took medical expenses.

ok
i used this software many years ago and it seemed easier then. when typing in items or reviewing you should be able to change item where you see it not jumping to another form and then having to find where the item is . I was also not able to scroll up or down on my touch screen computer .

Buggy and obtuse
buggy: on my Quebec remittance slip Balance due was 1270.48. Amount remitted is 1720.48 shown on both my copy and the remittance slip for Revenue Quebec.
Obtuse: My son is enrolled in university in Quebec. In order to enter his tuition and Exam expense correctly it is necessary to go into the forms mode and call up the appropriate schedules (without any apparent guidance from Turbo Tax) and manually enter the appropriate figures.
If you remain in the Easy Step mode the entries are not entered or entered incorrectly.

Works, HOrrible Interface
Used it previously for my small business and now just for personal returns. Works fine, although I have a simple return now. The interface is absolutely horrible. Pale lettering on pale backgrounds. If you're over 50 you'll struggle to see it. And the high contrast mode makes almost no difference.
Conversely, the font is so large and there is so much spacing you'll spend a lot of time scrolling around. I have a large laptop screen and I found it frustrating scrolling so much.
I'd stay away from their survey at the end. They want all manner of personal information they don't need to improve this product.
Terrible interface. Very pretty, probably won awards. Not functional though.

not maintaining technical advantage
The interface for TurboTax 2016, T5 reporting is inferior to prior years as it requires one to enter data for multiple boxes [e.g. 24, 25,26] in a subform which then appears as a total which makes proofing results more laborious. The program also auto fills and sets up forms used in prior year, which is helpful until life changes and you no longer need the T2125 or the T1135. It is then burdensome or impossible to delete the form, which means you face needless Review errors and wasted paper in printing. The TurboTax T1135 is also has a fixed number of country lines unlike the CRA form, meaning for many users it is totally useless.

EI Overpayment
I prepared taxes for a 16 year old niece who started her first job. Her employer deducted EI and Turbo Tax gave it back to her. I checked CRA and their is no minimum on EI deductions on EI Insurable Employment so why would she get ALL the EI back that she paid??? I put in the amount of Insurable Employment on the T4 page but Turbo Tax did not bring this number forward to Line 1 Total EI Insurable Earnings from ox 24 of T4 slip.

I've used this product for over 20 years but I'm done. For the past 2 years I have not been able to record the pension income split with my spouse. Last year, the help desk agreed that it wasn't possible. I sent a letter to customer service and received no reply. This year, despite the option to have the help desk call back, I again got no response. The on-line help was not useful. Surely pension splitting isn't uncommon. Instead, I've had to file my return without the pension information and then immediately send in an adjustment form to CRA to claim the amount. Not acceptable.

Glitches
Have been a customer for 5 years, this is the glitchiest version yet, difficult to navigate, search box is difficult to navigate, back to school section was set up so you had to enter wrong information in order to continue and correct it in a future box, not intuitive at all, industry codes in the business section do not match with revenue canada site and you get an error message that does not allow you to netfile. Not pleased and will look at other options next year

I do not like when I type some numbers on a line and it does not work. Get frustrated at that and the other thing is when you entre income, why does it not come in but you have to go on next line to see it and you think it is not there. Do not like some of these changes from the ones years ago. Have used this maybe too often and time to try a different program.

I did not enjoy using the 2016 version compared to last year. I prefer to look at all the forms. The size of the text is way too small. I could not find a way to increase the size. Will look at a different package next year.

Gets worse every year
Line numbers are completely out of order making it difficult to find where information is to be input. Worse still is the workflow. If I didn't know what I was supposed to do, I would be completely confused as to what I needed to do & when. Finally, when accessing the Help screens, I found that too often there would be no information referencing where in my return it was referring! Based on all this I'm seriously considering using alternate software next year.

Probably not again
It is getting more and more complicated. Also I am getting older. However - some things really bothered me.
1. For some reason I got a bunch of messages from US. I was supposed to file a US return. I tried to say: NO! but the reminders kept coming. Finally they stopped - but I never got to know why ?
2. The way the T-slips etc. are shown when you go back to check yourself, is 'hard' to understand. E.g. they show only part of the information - and then you have to go back and 'sort of' do it over again in order to see that everything is there. Sorry I cannot explain that better.
2. I owe Rev Canada. Why do I have to choose how to pay that now? For years I have filed and then gone to my bank to pay what I owe. Never any problem. - That option was not there , so I kept going in circles until I felt like throwing the computer through the window.
I realize that taxes are getting more complicated but . . . . . . so easy for you to ask: How do you want to pay? and then let me tell you. I do not like this years program!

Not sure why, maybe because of windows 10, but I got an error EVERY time a clicked to the next what ever. I just changed to windows 10 (HATE IT!) and that is the root of ALL my computer problems. Because of this error box popping up, I wasn't sure if it would send at the end! It did thankfully, but it stressed me out the whole time I was doing it! I was doing both mine and my wife's.
Note: then you have an Error Box and it has a saying in it........make the "saying" some sort of meaningful message! Most error boxes don't mean squat! Thanks in advance! I'm just guessing but I think the error was trying to tell me that my old Taxes could not be found on my other drive (which I had plugged in) but that's just a guess! That was the most stressful taxes yet!

had a few bugs with pension splitting of a deceased spouse as the spousal amounts would not transfer over. You use to be able to override values. This was essential when bugs were encountered.

Download misery
Once downloaded it worked fine, however, it took two calls and over 1.5 hours on the customer service line to get rid of script errors. This was a common problem, apparently, for a number of users and one would think that Turbo Tax could have fixed this bug long ago. Probably will look at a different tax prep software next year as I don't need the grief.

Complicated and confusing
I was very disappointed that the data transfer from CRA did not work with the CD version of the software I bought at the store. I had to spend almost two hours of trying to fix this by my self - without success - and then spend another hour with and 'expert' on the telephone help line, who guided me through deleting the CD software and then load the internet version. This is ridiculous. Also very difficult to do a family tax return. Access to the spouse's file was difficult and importing data from her CRA "my account" turned out to be impossible. She had no choice but to make her husband her representative. NEEDS IMPOVEMENT.

Forced to enter registration info EVERY year
Every single year I have to retype my stupid Turbotax registration. Why can't ALL of this information, if unchanged, be imported from the previous year return or from your own database, since Intuit sends emails and has the registration from the previous year. I've held out hope for Turbotax to get this to happen and as of this last filing, officially give up. I'll use a cheaper version of tax software since I HAVE to register each and every time anyway.

Has problems
Not the easiest software to use. For taxpayers in Quebec, there are several flaws in the software.
Never use the auto-fill! Wait a few years until the bugs have been ironed out; it's flaky.
The amount for workers over age 65 on the QC form is correctly labelled in the Easy Step process, but on the final summary, the amount is labelled for workers in remote areas. Luckily, the amount is in the right place on the official forms.
It took three trial returns to actually complete one final return. This whole process should be a lot easier as my return is not exactly complicated. Other users who have never used TurboTax before would be thoroughly confused.
It's better than filling in the forms by hand and doing the calculations by hand, but still needs a lot more beta testers, preferably from Quebec, before I can rate it higher than two stars.
