Ease in Filing

turbo tax
I found Turobtax easy to use. The retrieval of last years data is quite helpful (RRSP carry forward, auto-fill of name address etc)

Students Take Note! Crucial Flaw in Software
The software is overall good and is definitely good value for the money, but full-time students who are also working, watch out! You may be thilled getting a larger refund than expected, but you will have to give it back to Revenue Canada! The software has a crucial flaw. It first asks: Were you employed? You have to answer yes to this to enter any T4 slips you have, BUT THEN, the program will automatically give you the Working Income Benefit. A few questions later it askes if you were enrolled in studies or have student related expenses. You answer yes to that, but it never relates your answer back to the employment question! The software also never asks how many weeks you are enrolled in a programme of studies. If you are a full-time student, you are NOT entitled to the Working Income Benefit. I litterally had to force the program to take that Working Income Benefit out of the calculation, to ensure the refund as a student was correct, and not significantly overstated. If you are not experienced with taxes, you would not know to do that, and your will get a nasty surprise of a Re-Assessment from CRA, probably after you already spent the money.

My tax return is always a little difficult as I have a lot of expenses to claim. It doesn't help that I literally procrastinate until the final file date. I was able to figure out my expense payments and file quickly without feeling like I missed anything as the software kept checking to make sure that I had claimed everything I could. It also makes suggestions at the end if it thinks you missed a deduction. I have used turbotax for at least 9 years now and highly recommend it.

Good but
Overall the product makes it very easy to enter the info. I file it as a joint account but my issues came when calculating how much of our donations should be put on my wife's and because we were over generous this year we had a carry forward and the values it calculated did not jive with other software products. I ended up seeing a account and had them enter it in their software to get the proper values to enter.

Not as good as it once was
But as good once as it ever was. Don't get me wrong. It does a fine job of getting the paperwork done electronically.
However I get the impression they have cut back on the HELP the help button provides in a big way. In years gone by it actually told you something intelligent as long as you clicked the help button when you were on a particular line item. It may have not been much but it shared whatever you would normally see in a CRA description. Now they have taken that out and what you usually get is an almost blank screen that says tell me what you are looking for and I will try to find it. Then they put up what looks like a user forum of Q & A that really is useless.
So if you know what you want to fill out and are ready to do it... the standard package is good value for your money. I just think they could put back the links to normal cra information they used to have in years gone by.

Warnings
Overall I like this product. It is very easy to use in the step by step process. I buy this product every year because of not having to enter all my information over again. Now with the import feature it is even more beneficial. My one frustration with this product is in the review section. It keeps warning of things that it should know does not apply by the information that is entered or not entered in the step by step process. I find it very annoying and can be confusing to someone less aware that this is the issue. However, it will probably not prevent me from purchasing it next time.

So much easier than forms!
I've tried the online version and was very disappointed, but the regular CD version is very easy to use and helpful in filling out the forms. I'm not a finance person so taxes are daunting. I would definitely recommend buying the boxed version of the software - the online one is nothing like it, especially the free version.

Good value for money,easy to use for the most part
The switch back and forth from CRA website hung the product, the software froze a couple of times. In the first instance I lost all tax information for me and my spouse and had to create a new file and re-do data entry.
At the end, the software was giving me an error message stating it can't auto netfile and gave me directions to correct the error but when I followed the directions, nothing was changing. Lost a small amount of work as I had to close and restart the application.

Turbotax Can Still be Improved
TurboTax makes filing taxes easy for our family. But, I hope the built-in "help" broadens more the explanations. Some help explanations are vague or somewhat incomplete. It should be easily understood by the average taxpayer and more situational examples. I hope they lower their prices just like their competitors.

Needs one improvement
Turbotax is great but it won't let you open two returns at a time so I have to go back and forth between my return and my husband's, making changes and filling in line amounts. This is time consuming and frustrating. Everything else is easy and quick.

REporting medical expenses
Medical expense reporting - one option is just to report a summary rather than enter the details of each expense, but there is not a good reporting method for this option. A good reporting option would include date of earliest expense and date of latest expense.

Pretty good overall
Generally a good program; and interview systems works fine. I was trying to do some background research re some of the entries and did not find the Help function to always be very intuitive. However, I got thru it with no issues in the end, as my questions got resolved with the final REVIEW step. That is a good feature. I found it was a fast program, and NETFILE process was very simple and fast. So thanks!

Convenient
Allows input of data as it is received. Don't have to do calculations and even better, don't have to recalculate when new info is received. Easy to file. Good when filing for several family members.

good value overall
Support is satisfactory, overall. Navigation can be annoying (still), e.g., toggling between spousal returns should take you to the same spot on each, as the default. It would be helpful to keep the spousal options tools on the bottom of each window, not only on the T1General. Saving info should be automatic and not left to the user to action.

It's worked each year with varying success
I had a "specific to me" issue with turbotax this year regarding a new T4A we received. It was frustrating and distressing; however, I did get it resolved with two different exceptional agents. I was very, very happy with the customer service. I was calling with questions on May 1, 2017 -- final deadline, and I was able to get through with only 5 minutes of waiting. Both agents were extremely helpful. That alone would make me use turbotax again!

One deficiency noted
The Easy file method does not make it easy for a client to claim tax deducted from a patronage dividend received from a grocery store. I had to go into the 'forms' method to access an area where I could input the tax deducted amount. However, not all your customers would be able to do that, and they would therefore miss out on claiming the tax deducted.

Fairly Straightforward
I found the Standard version helpful. I disliked that the Optimization Tools happened at the end and not in the sections when they were mentioned. I could not find the Medical Expenses Optimizer, for example, so I figured it out myself, only to be presented with it as an option much later in the process after I'd already done the work manually. It does figure out lots of things for you, though.

I have trusted Turbo Tax over the years,as I age I find it a little more difficult if you change the format so when I am not sure how to answer some the questions, I wing it to you and you seem to get me to the right place.

get the software
I have used TurboTax software for years. Last year I made the mistake of doing the online version which saves (or in my case holds hostage) your info in a cloud. I went to review my 2015 return only to find they had no record of me paying and had to go through a long process to get access to my records which involved the very invasive remote accessing of my computer. The person I got (when I finally found a phone # to call!) was lovely and was helpful but DONT USE
THE ONLINE VERSION! The software is great and easy to use although they will try to upsell you throughout the process only those with very complicated returns will benefit from their add ons.

Small tweaks
In the beginning, there was QuickTax. Then came Turbotax. A couple of points for improvement that have never been changed.
1. Until you enter your spouse's net income on page 1 of T!, Turbotax automatically assumes zero income. This shows a tax refund for dependent spouse, by default. Please reverse this default to assume spouse has income and is not an eligible dependent.
2. As a long time user, and paper return copy user, please add DOUBLE SIDED printing to the print return option. I do use blue paper, as well, since you have maintained the CRA colour coding system, which I like.
Otherwise, keep up the good work.
