Some software glitches
T5013 :
Box 5 takes 0.00 (2 decimals only) where by i needed 6 decimals.
Box 113 Missing ( I had values to enter, Support mentioned that it is not needed)
Rel 15 (Qc):
Box 14 takes only 7 digits where by I had 9 (After an hour with Support they suggested a refund as no solution was available)

The Schedule 3-Supplementary Statement should have one more additional page. For anybody that trades stocks, there are not enough entry lines. You could minimize the current number of lines allocated for T5008 slips. hopefully you will make this change for 2017.

New Experience
To begin it was a disappointment as I've used this software for at least 10 years;this year it would not work with Windows XP, but there was no warning on the package(Large enough to see) a real error on your part because it was necessary for me to upgrade to Windows 7 an additional cost. I am in my 82nd year and while I'm conversant with computers there was an oblique learning curve involved.Where your company really shone was the experienced pleasant help that was available by phone. In both problems, one relating to installation and one in preparing my return and forward last years info I could not have asked for more pleasant and supportive people, one a man and one a woman. Best of all I wasn't treated like a child, but a competent adult. For your service is the reason I've rated you so highly.But my experience over a decade has been excellent;not every software manufacturer can get that kind of compliment from me.Cheers Rogers.

A Problem
It was very difficult figuring out what to do about my wife and I's joint assets. The program doesn't ask what's joint, so I have to put interest income and rental income, for example, under one spouse or the other. Moving entries back and forth between spouses is not the easiest thing in the world, either. It's a long and difficult process to try to figure out which spouse to attribute the income to, to get the best tax advantage. Compounding this problem is the Old Age Security. Is it better to wipe out my wife's payments or arrange our returns so that she gets partial OAS?
So I did not find the format to be particularly helpful with those things. I felt like I was on my own.

Failed to give insturctions on how to get T 1.2 security working in Chrome
Second year in a row difficult to enter instalment amounts
When you have already chosen not to make CPP payments and this is included in your previous years' Turbotax file, asks confusing questions as if this decision needs to be made again. Starts off calculating amount due based on CPP premium payment even though payer has opted out previously
Can's enter some amounts without using the f7 list key
Overall still no too bad but a little slow from year to year in fixing glitches (such as the instalment issue)

Best consumer tax program out there.
I would like to see description line for T-slips, charitable donations, and medical receipts carry forward from prior year's return. This would save a lot of typing. The tie into CRA T-slip records is very useful, as well as being able to install TurboTax on our second household computer.

Standard Turbo Tax 2016
Usage and filing is always good but this year I was very disappointed in the update feature that even with your specialists couldn't fix. Eventually I had to download online copy and update latest version. Because of this problem I don't feel comfortable getting assessment feature through Turbo Tax where in previous years I would have easily applied for this feature.

Good product, charitable donations optimizer sucks
Overall Turbo tax is a really good program. My only complaint is the way Turbo tax handles charitable amounts. I wanted to split the charitable amounts between myself and my spouse but preparing our returns together Turbo tax would not allow it as it defaults to using all charitable amounts on the higher income spouse. This may work for the majority of people but it does not work for us. There needs to be an option to manually split charitable donations while preparing taxes together with a spouse without overriding the program and making the return ineligible for Netfile. I decided I didn't want to file paper copies so I went back and re-did everything in order to prepare our returns separately so I could split the charitable donations to our maximum benefit. The charitable donations optimizer sucks whether preparing our taxes together or separately. It has never given me the best optimization for our charitable amounts in all the years I've used Turbotax and I've had to go through and manually figure out our best claim for charitable donations. It seems that Turbo tax assumes that people are dealing with small amounts of charitable donations, but myself and my spouse are dealing with thousands of dollars of donations. Fix the charitable donations optimizer and it'll be a much better program. All in all that's my only major complaint. Otherwise it's a great program, easy to use, makes doing our own taxes easy.

A suggestion for the display of a person's file after submission, it should not be shown as "continue your return" any more as it's done already. It's quite confusing as you may think I still have to work on this file. It should be indicated something like "filed" or "submitted", etc.

Foreign Pension Income
Foreign pension income is combined with regular Canadian pension income on line 115. By doing this, it was hard to tell that I made an error by putting in the converted to Canadian dollars instead of the US dollar amount in the data input.
It may appear obvious to most, not for me doing it the first time.
There should be a better check!

Some Problems this year
Would not netfile, gave error "xml2016" Called support, very helpful support people but the problem could not be fixed and they wanted to escalate my call which meant sending them my tax files. we were nervous about sending these files so decided to print and mail. Only when we saw the printed return file did we notice that our street address was missing and replaced with a "9". We had definitely entered this info. We recalled that while entering other info when we rechecked it was not saved or the entry was not what we input. one example was the date period for medical expenses that when checked was completely different. We have used Turbo Tax for about ten years with no problem.

Less easy this year
While overall TurboTax is still very good, I found that one operation in particular -- the "go-back" option -- was less easy to use this year. The pull-down menu after hitting the BACK icon offered a less than comprehensive listing, and it was a struggle to return to the precise screen that I wanted.

When you do the update, I then needed to uninstall the program and then reinstall it again. I was not happy about it. Found this year that it had some little problems that I haven't had in the past years.

Now More Awkward
Somehow the "tweaks" to this year's program has made it more awkward & less intuitive to use. Often an explanation is provided on a page AFTER the one asking the question, requiring one to remember what one wasn't sure of & what one answered when on a later page providing the necessary information. Otherwise, the format is essentially the same. The "Autofill" feature is a nice time saver.

Turbo Tax Review
I am a regular user of Turbo Tax and do understand about updates and such ............ I have used it probably over 10-15 years ..... netfile becomes easier every year which I like . I would love to see the format stay "similar" if not "the same" year in year out ... I don't think I have EVER been able to say that I know what is coming next ....as it changes every year. I spend my first 30 minutes learning the "new way" and would love to just get on with it every year because the format and means of giving feedback to me doesn't change year to year .... this is my only complaint.

Continually improving
The only area that I can see for improvement is the hard copy ( printing ) area.
When you select individual forms , there should be a total number of pages to be printed.
Option to go back and change that.
Otherwise, great as usual.

Happy and disappointed
The ability of the program to bring in pertinent information from the previous year and to identify the specific forms needed for that person's case is a big time saver. There is quite a bit of information to help answer questions without having to wait on the phone for assistance. I did NOT like the fact that when printing a copy of the completed return for my personal files, I was offered the option of only printing out those forms that were actually used, but even selecting this option, everything printed out - a big waste of paper, ink and time!

Good but....
The feature missing from TurboTax is the ability to carry forward information from a separate disk. I did this for years but the feature seems to be gone now. This year's version did not locate my info from the computer and I ended up re-doing it. This is despite my having last year's taxes on a carefully saved disc. I would like this ability to use a separate disk restored.

Quick & Easy
I am a long-term TurboTax (and previously Quicktax) user, and this year as always I was more than satisfied with the product. It is easy to use, intuitive, it guides me through the process, and offers hints/suggestions in appropriate places. I completed tax returns for myself and my wife (which the product allows me to do simultaneously), and for my son-in-law, and daughter (with two dependants). Some of the features I really like are the various optimizers (for my wife & myself, calculates the best amount for pension splitting, the best return to claim medical expenses and charitable donations against), as well as RSP Contribution optimizer etc. I used the import feature to import reporting slips from My CRA account this year, and also used the Express Assessment feature after I had Netfiled our taxes, to confirm what our refunds would be. I definitely recommend TurboTax if you're looking for a product to do your own taxes.
